I agree that a cheap guitar can play well, providing it has been reasonably well set up and what you use it for. I have played some horrible old guitars that had action that hurt my fingers, but a good musician would probably still make them sound good. I used to visit a music shop in a country town that was mostly second hand instruments. It was a town that relied on itinerants to work on farms in season. They would buy an instrument from the store and often sell it back to him at the end of the season. Whenever there were few customers, the owner would play on the instruments and they would sound amazing. I have a Tex Morton original guitar (look it up) that is horrible to play. The sound board doesn't resonate and the action is shocking. But I used to put a clip on pickup on it and play slide on it. It sounded great. They are rare now and I could easily get $2,000 for it. Won't be selling it though :D
I used to have a ton of friends growing up who’d buy Squiers and Epiphones, and turn them into something great. My first guitar was a Squier that I still have. Pickups have been swapped, and for the amount of time I spent learning guitar on it, the neck feels incredible. I’ll have to look up Tex Morton, sounds interesting. 👍
