This week’s issue of Six String Sunday will make your a better guitarist, and it might even make you a better mixing engineer too. We have lots of great lessons, new music and more to check out this week.
Thanks for checking out my new single “Between Daylight” last week. It’s been so amazing to hear all your feedback. The backing track version of the song is coming this week, so stay tuned to ChasingSound.com and @ChasingSound on all the socials. I have another new single cooking up right now, that I hope to share with you in the next couple of weeks.
Alright, let’s get into these links!
This week’s guitar links!
- Hybrid Picking | 10 Levels | Beginner to Pro - I love when Jack Gardiner does these '10 Levels' style videos. This week's vid focuses on getting into hybrid picking. If you want to play some truly epic lines, that sound really technical, check out the first couple levels of this video.
- Guthrie Trapp Trio Live From The Underdog 6/5/23 (Set 1) - Guthrie Trapp went live with his trio this week. The guys streamed their whole first set from The Underdog in Nashville, TN. Guthrie is an awesome player, and if you're looking to play like him, you should check out his new course over at TrueFire.
- Riff Retrospective: Extreme II: Pornograffitti - This Friday saw the release of Extreme's brand new album ‘SIX’. The album is full of incredible guitar playing, and it's really been Nuno-palooza around the internet lately, and for good reason. In this video, Ben Eller goes over some of the best riffs from another awesome Extreme album, ‘Pornograffitti’. If you want to 'get the funk out’, you should check out this video. 😄
- Shred Pentatonics Like Eric Johnson, Mateus Asato and Joe Bonamassa - I'm always looking for fun ways to make everyone's favorite 5 note scale more exciting. John Cordy did a great lesson this week on shredding pentatonic scales. There's tab, and an explanation of combining different groups of notes to make some slick sounding lines.
- This is the song most Americans want to learn how to play on guitar – and you probably know what it is - I think maybeeeee you know what track this is.
- We're releasing a game! (really... this is real) - Rob Scallon has been working with the people at Playdigious to create a guitar video game called Fretless. The game has the player collecting guitars, adding pedals to pedal boards and more. It looks like a lot of fun, and I can't wait to check it out when it comes out in 2024!
- The Most Powerful EQ Move? - If you've been reading the newsletter or website over the past couple of weeks, we've been talking all about songwriting, recording and mixing. I wanted to link to this great video from Joe over at the Recording Revolution (one of my favorite home recording channels over the last 10+ years). Joe shows a method that I use every time I'm mixing, to really make space, and get rid of problem frequencies on tracks. If you're recording and mixing your own music, you should check this video out.
- Is the 4x12 guitar cabinet still relevant today? - Paul Gough over at Guitarist makes the case if 4x12 cabinets are still relevant for the modern guitar player. What's your take on this article?
- Do YOU Know Your Triads & Scales? Do This Practice Routine And Find Out! - Want a really great warm up that's full of chords and scales you should absolutely know? Take a look at this video from Levi Clay, who recently released his second 'Guide Practice Routines For Guitar' book, which features fundamentals exactly like this.
- 10 Metallica guitar techniques you need to know - The Metallica machine has once again spun up for a legendary world tour in support of their new '72 Seasons’ album. If you want some great rhythm and lead ideas to work on, in the vein of James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, this is a great lesson to start with.
- DREAMSONIC 2023 live chat with John Petrucci, Devin Townsend, Tosin Abasi & Javier Reyes - Some of my favorite guitar players, John Petrucci, Devin Townsend, and the guys in Animals As Leaders did a fun live chat as they gear up for the 2023 Dreamsonic tour. Are you getting out to see this tour?
