The Duke of Tone, Joey Landreth's awesome pedalboard, and How to Lock Your Strings
Plus, an epic tribute to Taylor Hawkins
Pumpkin spice is showing up everywhere, the weather’s getting cooler, and fall is right around the corner. This summer was filled with lots of guitar practice for me, and as we head into the last 4 months of 2022, I’m looking to make Chasing Sound even better than before. Keep an eye on this newsletter for all the updates coming to the website, this newsletter, and more.
Also, as I’m finishing up this week’s issue, I just got done watching the full Taylor Hawkins tribute concert from Wembley Arena. Wow, what an incredible night. So many stars showed up to pay homage to the legacy of the Foo Fighters late drummer. It’s rare that you see this caliber of musicians all gracing the same stage in one night. If you want to check out the full show, which ran nearly 6 hours, you can check it out here. (Update: MTV has since privated the video on YouTube. Hopefully they put it back up soon. In the meantime, it looks like if you have Paramount+, you’ll still be able to watch it.)
Let's get into this week's links!
- How To Lock Strings For Better Tuning Stability - Are you struggling with tuning stability on your guitar? The guys at StringJoy show us how to lock strings on a number of different tuning pegs. Save this video for future reference, as it's really helpful.
- Your Solos Will Never Sound The Same After Learning This - I've brought up triads many times in this newsletter and on livestreams. In this video, Ross Campbell shows us how learning triads and their inversions will help outline chords while soloing. He also made a fantastic video earlier in the week on licks that sound great on a LP. You can check that out here.
- Daniele Gottardo | INkBlot (Official Music Video) - Daniele Gottardo's new album INkBlot is fantastic. Gottardo just put up a video for the title track, which features a small orchestral section backing him up, while he shows off some intense tapping. Make sure to check out the rest of his catalog, including his trio, Daniele Gottardo and the Nuts, for more jazzier / cover versions of songs.
- Julian Lage - Chavez (Official Video) - If you'd rather listen to some exciting jazz, Julian Lage has been putting out singles from his upcoming album at a quick pace. His latest is for “Chavez”, which is the most energetic of all the songs I've heard off this new album. Lage is truly a breath of fresh air in the jazz space.
- People Say These Guitars Aren't Worth It! ( They are wrong Trust Me.) - Robert Baker makes the case for using your volume and tone knob more often. Especially on guitars with one pickup. You'd be surprised at how many sounds you can get, even without using pedals.
- Playing Guitar EVERY Day Changed my Life - John Cordy shares some thoughts on how playing guitar every day made a huge impact in his life. Later in the week, he also came out with a helpful video, recommending free apps for guitar. You can check that out here.
- Joey & Dave Landreth Visit TPS! [Short Edit - Tone Talk, Band Session, Monster Pedal Board & More!] - I'm a huge Ariel Posen fan. When I traced back his roots a few years back, The Bros. Landreth came up, who Ariel played with for a while. Joey & Dave Landreth visit The Pedal Show. Joey's board is truly something to marvel at. I was in love with the tones he was coaxing from that rig.
- Mattias IA Eklundh - The Native Hue Of Resolution - Mattias Eklundh has been doing his Freak Guitar Camp for a long time. He typically has the students work on a big piece of music throughout their time there. "The Native Hue of Resolution" is a 16 minute song from the 2022 camp, and it is a monster of a track!
- Why the Pros LOVE This Scale - If you're a metal fan, or if you want to make your solos sound more intense, you should check out Rick Beato's explanation of the Phrygian Dominant scale.
- MXR partners with revered boutique builder Analog Man for the Duke of Tone - Don't want to wait years for a King of Tone? You're in luck, Analog Man just teamed up with MXR to create the Duke of Tone. The pedal sounds awesome, and we already have someone in our Discord who's picking one up. If we get good feedback, I'll let you know!
- EVH reimagines the 5150 Deluxe model with an ornate Limited Edition Ash finish - In other gear news, if you're looking for a shred guitar that has modern day electronics/features, but still has an understated look, you should check out the new limited edition ash finish for EVH's 5150 deluxe. In similar news, Charvel launched a new Jim Root signature, that sounds incredible for a similar price as the EVH. Check that out here.
- Scalpers immediately bump up Noel Gallagher ES-355 prices by 5,000 - And finally, Noel Gallagher along with Gibson and Epiphone released 2 new signature models. It seems the guitars are selling out everywhere, and are already fetching thousands more than their original sale price.
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading Six String Sunday!
