So much new music, amazing guitar advice, and all the news from GearFest
Plus a brand new Ozzy track featuring Jeff Beck!
This week’s issue of 6SSC has everything from new music by Julian Lage, Cory Wong, Plini and Tim Henson, to great lessons on how to play like Joe Satriani, plus advice on guitar skills that’ll really make a difference in your playing. I hope you dig this week’s issue. If there’s anything I missed, make sure to reply to me!
5 Levels Of Chords (From Beginner To Pro) - If you’re looking to break out of your common, cowboy chords, you should check out Rhett Shull’s latest video. He teaches us ways to play chords all over the fretboard, so you’ll never be locked into just one position on the neck. It’s a lot of fun to see Rhett take simple chords and morph them into something awesome sounding.
“Sunset” (feat. Tim Henson & Cory Wong) - Plini, Tim Henson and Cory Wong all join forces for a guitar summer jam called “Sunset”. I loved the playing on this track, and dig how each player lent their own unique tone and style to the song.
How to play funk guitar in the style of John Frusciante, Cory Wong, Melanie Faye and more - If you want to play guitar like Wong, John Frusciante, Eric Krasno and more, check out this new lesson from Guitar World. There’s some great rhythm examples, with tab and audio. You can never have too much cool, rhythm knowledge!
Julian Lage - Auditorium - One of my favorite jazz players, Julian Lage is back with a new single called “Auditorium”. It’s the first track off his upcoming album. Not only is the playing on this track great, we also got news that Bill Frisell is guesting on the album. The full album is due out in September.
Jazz Guru Bill Frisell’s Top Ten Tips For Guitarists - Speaking of Bill Frisell, he recently dropped ten tips for guitarists. And while this list is aimed at guitar players, it’s really good for advice for any musician out there.
Kirk Fletcher - Afraid To Die, Too Scared To Live - Let’s jump out of jazz, and get into some great blues playing. Check out Kirk Fletcher’s latest single “Afraid to Die, Too Scared to Live”. The solo on this track is just fantastic. Plus check out the video’s description for Fletcher’s backing band, which is a who’s who of the blues and rock world.
You NEED to Learn this Steve Vai Inspired Lick - If you’re looking to challenge yourself, you should check out John Cordy’s video on an awesome Steve Vai style lick he just cooked up. I love how he mentions creating this lick in a more pattern based way so he could eventually get it into his regular improv one day.
When you’re too distracted to practice guitar… - Feel like your attention is being pulled in so many different directions? You’re not alone. If you’re too distracted when trying to practice, this video from Mary Spender might help you get more focused.
The WORST musical advice ever given - What about an anti-advice video? I loved hearing all these great guitar YouTubers talk about the absolute worst advice they’ve ever received.
Revolutionary Lick of Uli Jon Roth - Animated Licks EP20 - Growing up, I was always amazed at Uli Jon Roth’s playing, and his wild Sky Guitars - the guitars had a space age look, and a crazy amount of frets. I enjoyed this video from Mika Tyyska, where he shows us a killer pull off lick that’ll be useful everywhere in your playing.
Learn the many guitar styles of Joe Satriani with this blockbuster lesson - Guitar World just put up a mega lesson on Joe Satriani. They focus on 4 main areas of his playing - ballads, odd times, scales and modes, his bluesy playing, and his hard rock playing. If you’re a fan of instrumental guitar at all, you should check this lesson out!
7 Guitar Skills That Pay Off Forever - Excellent video from Jens Larsen, with 7 helpful skills you can develop, that’ll serve you for years down the road in your guitar playing. These are tips you might have heard over and over again - learn songs by ear, record and analyze yourself, etc. The reason we keep hearing these things over and over again, is because they work, but they require putting in the work too!
Turns out we were all wrong.. - David Wallimann talks about a lightbulb that went off for him a while back while studying Alan Holdsworth. What he did was map out his scales first, and with all these notes across the fretboard, made chords from the scales he was using. Sounds like a no brainer, but many people start with the chords first. It’s nice to turn these ideas on their head every once in a while.
Lari Basilio - Your Love - Looking for that laid back, weekend chill out track? Check out Lari Basilio’s latest song, “Your Love”. She’s in the studio on her signature Ibanez, in what looks to be a stack of Laney amps.
Understanding Rhythm On A DEEPER Level - Pulse, 1/4 Notes & 8th Notes! - Notes and melody are nothing if they’re not accompanied by a solid sense of rhythm. If you have around 30 free minutes in your practice schedule, you should check out this new lesson from Levi Clay where he breaks down some basic rhythm ideas.
GearFest 2022 Day 1 Livestream: Buddy Guy, Aaron Marshall, Jay Weinberg (Slipknot), Ally Venable - Sweetwater’s GearFest to me has been just as or even more exciting than NAMM every year. This year’s GearFest is from June 24th-June 28th, and has gear debuts, master classes, interviews and so much more. Head over to their YouTube channel to check out all the new stuff, including this video with some of the highlights of day one.
Blues Legend, Buddy Guy on His Incredible Life Story and The Future of Blues - There’s so much stuff coming out of GearFest, but I had to spotlight Buddy Guy’s interview. Buddy is truly one of the last living blues legends, and it’s always a treat to hear his stories. If you have a little extra time, Pete Thorn and Tim Pierce reunited for a insightful podcast at GearFest as well. You can check that out here.
Ozzy Osbourne - Patient Number 9 (Official Music Video) ft. Jeff Beck - To wrap up this week’s issue, I had to share Ozzy’s latest track. Not only am I so happy he’s still kicking, but he looks darn good for 73, AND his new track “Patient Number 9” features none other than Jeff Beck on guitar. I took a look at the tracklist for Ozzy’s upcoming album, and it features Zakk Wylde, Mike McCready, Clapton and Tony Iommi. Really looking forward to hearing what everyone does!
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading Six String Sunday!
