Thankful for our community
I gotta say folks, I am so grateful this year to everyone who reads this little newsletter. I love the guitar community, and it’s only gotten better over the last 5-10 years, as we find new and exciting ways to connect. I’m all Black Friday-ed out at this point, and I had a great Thanksgiving dinner with the family. Did you get anything fun in the last few days? Let me know in the comments.
Been enjoying a couple of much needed days off from work, and so I wanted to quickly share my comments on some of my favorite links of the week. I also wanted to announce the winner of The Advancing Guitarist. I only had a few people respond to last week’s email, and after running my trusty number generator, it’s our good friend David Donaldson who’s winning his own copy. Reach out to me David and I’ll hook ya up!
Hope you’re having a great holiday season so far. Let’s get into this week’s links!
This week’s links!

- Use Guitar Pro as a PRO (tools + practice tips) - If you've been reading the newsletter for any amount of time, you'd know I fell in love with Guitar Pro a while back after watching Levi Clay's excellent videos on the app. Recently JustinGuitar came out with a video on how he uses the notation software for practice. If you still haven't gotten this amazing bit of software, use my linkto check it out! It's an affiliate link, but it costs you nothing more to use it, and it helps the site.
- Top 10 Pedal Advertisements Ever Made! - There have been some wild and wacky ways people have advertised pedals over the years. Josh from JHS Pedals goes over his top 10 guitar pedal ads ever. Which one was your favorite?
- Winding Stratocaster Pickups by hand - Friend of the newsletter Simon Allaway is back in his lab, this time winding Strat-style pickups by hand, to get that Knopfler type tone. To my ears, it sounds like he succeeded!
- Christone "Kingfish" Ingram plays Jimi's Red House... on the roof of Hendrix's last-known house - We're coming up on what would have been Jimi's 80th birthday. To my delight, all sorts of fun ‘Hendrix at 80' stuff is coming out - from covers to interviews, video footage, songs from the vault, and much more. While I can't say I enjoyed the recent cover of Hendrix's “Angel”, what I did really love, was “Kingfish" playing “Red House”, in a very special location.
- “If You Stick With It, You’re Going to Be Rewarded”: Jimi Hendrix Talks Guitar Technique, Songwriting, Making Records, Playing Live and More in This Essential ‘GP’ Interview From 1968 | GuitarPlayer - What was Jimi doing back in 1968? Check out this awesome interview from Guitar Player, where Hendrix talks about everything from songwriting to playing guitars other than a Strat, and a lot more. I loved the scan of the old GP cover.
- The Edge Does This, So Should You! | 5 Minute Tones - Fan of U2's The Edge, and looking to get his sound on some Fractal gear? One of my favorite YouTubers, Leon Todd, hooks it up in his latest '5 Minute Tone' video.
- 30 Days Into My 90-Day Guitar Challenge - Really enjoyed watching this vlog from Samuel Goodwin. The best thing you can take away from this video? Set a short challenge for yourself - 90 days flys by in an instant (heck, 2022 is almost over). And look at how much progress you can make in such a short amount of time. Good work Sam!
- Learn 5 Eric Johnson chords that utilize his trademark ‘shell’ voicing for big ambient clean tones | Guitar World - Shell voiced chords are one of Eric Johnson's most interesting aspects of his playing style. Check out these 5 shell voiced chords, and try to add one or two into your own playing.
- Black Crowes guitarist teaches stage crasher a lesson with his Tele - I mean, first and foremost, don't crash the stage. Especially now, since we've seen so many tragedies at clubs over the years. At the same time, a guitar to the neck seems pretty tough. What's your call on this one?
That’s it for this week! Thanks for reading Six String Sunday Club.
