Now that we’ve eaten alllll the food, and shopped all the sales, it’s time to close out November with a packed issue of Six String Sunday Club. James Hetfield’s new book ‘Messengers’ was just released, and it’s awesome! We have a couple lessons on slide guitar, Shawn Tubbs showing off his pedalboard, and much more.
I have absolutely nothing to sell to ya this week. I just wanted to say how thankful I am for every one of you who’s read this newsletter over the past bunch of years. Thanks so much for supporting what I do. If you ever want to talk guitar, I’d love it if you stopped by our Discord channel and said hello. Alright, let's get into the links for this week.
This week’s guitar links!
- Derek Trucks Guitar Solo Compilation - ELEVEN Solos WITH TABS! - Derek Trucks is one of my favorite slide players, and Levi Clay is one of the best transcribers out there. Levi put together an awesome Trucks solo compilation, with super accurate tab.
- Billy Gibbons Slide Guitar Secrets - Want even more slide? Check out Late Night Lessons - who just recently hit 100K subs on YouTube - talking all about Billy Gibbons slide playing. If you love ZZ Top, David Brewster pulls out a bunch of awesome slide licks from a couple albums they put out in the 70's.
- Messengers: The Guitars of James Hetfield Unboxing Video - I waited months and months for this book to come out. 'Messengers’ is a huge book all about the guitars of James Hetfield. Metallica is a big reason I picked up a guitar in the first place, so I was super excited to check this out. It features amazing pictures and stories about James' most classic guitars. I got the standard book, but in this video, Hetfield is unboxing the deluxe edition, which costs a mighty $750!
- Matteo Mancuso’s guitar technique: How does he do it? - If you think I've been linking to a lot of Matteo Mancuso videos lately, it's because I feel like he's making a big dent in the guitar world, and any bit of lesson material from him, is gold! His latest lesson is a half hour from Thomann's Guitar & Basses, where he talks about his incredible guitar technique.
- Embellish Your Chords Like JIMI HENDRIX! - If you're just starting out, you might think Hendrix was all about his lead playing, but his rhythm playing was also very influential to a number of guitarists. In this new lesson from Marty Schwartz, he shows us how to embellish chords just lke Jimi.
- BEATLES Secret Chord: Playing A 24 Note Chord On 1 Guitar? - Have you ever heard a 24 note chord? Ever since 1964, a ton of musicians have been trying to put together what chord the Beatles were playing at the beginning of “A Hard Day's Night”. In this new video, James Hargreaves does a little detective work on what it might be.
- Shawn Tubbs Shows Off His Sound | What’s on Your Pedalboard? - I can't get enough of Shawn Tubbs' album of short guitar ideas, called 'Demolition'. If you haven't checked it out yet, you can pick up a copy on Bandcamp. Shawn sat down with Sweetwater to discuss the latest iteration of his pedalboard. It features a couple of Strymon pedals, stuff from Keeley, Boss and more.
- The Most Detailed Picking Technique Lesson Video I've Ever Shared - Ozz Guitar does a mini masterclass on picking technique, featuring players like Govan, Gilbert, Becker, Malmsteen, and others.
- “The whole idea of being a great guitar player is nobody can do you like you… Mean Street is the perfect storm of why people don't f**k with Edward Van Halen”: Nuno Bettencourt explains why you’ve gotta give Joe Satriani “a pass” - Can you imagine any universe where people are giving Joe Satriani crap about his guitar playing? Turns out, we're living in one of those worlds. Everyone needs to cut Satch some slack. I think any one of us would go crazy to play in any formation of Van Halen.
- "This is what separates the pros from the Joes…" Gary Hoey's top five tips for guitarists (and a bonus tip from Steve Morse) - I remember listening to Gary Hoey's 'Money’ back in ‘99 and being floored by his playing. Gary has played with everyone from Satch and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, to Peter Frampton, Vai and more. In this interview with Guitar Player, Hoey shares 5 excellent tips for guitarists - including a fun way to practice bends, pushing yourself, and the "trill drill".
Hey did you know, not only do I talk guitar each week, but I also teach it!
Try out a half an hour to see how much you can learn when you know the right things to practice. Whether you want to learn guitar, recording, mixing or more, I can help you out!
