In writing this week’s issue, I saw that we passed an insane milestone for the Six String Sunday Club newsletter recently. Last issue was actually issue three hundred!
I've been doing this little newsletter for around 6 years at this point, and I've met so many amazing people because of it. It's one of the things that's been a constant over that stretch of time, and I’m so happy if you’ve been there along the way with me.
It’s Song Challenge Time!
I'm so excited right now, because this Monday we’re kicking into songwriting challenge mode for the month of May! Make sure to head to ChasingSound.com for this week's post, all about songwriting! This month is going to be a blast, and I have content for each and every week planned. Hang out on the main Chasing Sound site, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Discord and everywhere else.
Alright, let's get into these links!
This Week’s Guitar Links!
- How To Play ANY Song By Just LISTENING With FRANK TEDESCO! - Ear Training Tips - I loved watching this video, where Levi Clay invited piano player Frank Tedesco on to talk about learning songs by ear. Even though Frank plays piano, there's tons of great information here for any musician.
- Speaking of piano, I just started to link up with the folks over at Pianote. It’s a great site where you can learn piano at your own pace. I’m getting back into playing piano myself, and I think it’ll be a great way to help my songwriting. If you’d like a free trial, make sure to use my code! You can help out the site and get some free time as well.
- INTERVALS for Guitar –crystal clear and ultimate guide - One of the biggest things that Frank talks about in that Levi Clay video above, is intervals. The YouTube channel QJAmTracks, put out a great video this week on intervals and what they mean to guitar players and navigating the fretboard.
- 7 Tips to Improve Your Guitar-Playing Technique - Knowing the language of music is just one part of being a great guitarist. The other side of the coin is having great technique. Premier Guitar just put out a video that focuses on 7 tips to improve your technique on guitar. The tips are good and straightforward, but the best piece of advice comes near the beginning of the video...you have to put in the time to see any results.
- The Wong Compressor // Wampler Pedals and Cory Wong - I'm a big fan of Cory Wong. I think his funk playing, his teaching, and his overall persona is a lot of fun. Cory teamed up with Brian Wampler to make the Wong Compressor. The pedal is a little over 200 bucks, and sounds great. There's a lot of extra features that make this pedal special, like a boost, different LEDs for modes, an always on button, and even an XLR out. This will definitely be going on the next board I make! You can check out episode 458 of the Chasing Tone podcast where the guys at Wampler discuss all the cool things about the new pedal.
- This Is What Separates PRO Guitarists From The Rest - Speaking of Cory Wong, one of the things that separates him from a lot of other players is his insane pocket and rhythm work. Rhett Shull talks about rhythm and timing in his latest video, with 3 ways that you can develop some solid grooves in your own playing.
- “In a Lot of Cases, Cheaper Guitars Sound as Good or Better Than Expensive Guitars”: Warren Haynes Shares Some Invaluable Tips for Blues and Rock Guitarists at Every Stage of the Game - I loved that GP brought back this 2019 Warren Haynes interview, as it has some great advice in it. Haynes talks about playing in front of others, and why it's so important. And he also touches on getting a good sound out of any guitar and amp, even if it's a cheaper model. If you're looking for some good blues-rock inspiration, check this interview out.
Hey did you know, not only do I talk guitar each week, but I also teach it!
Try out a half an hour to see how much you can learn when you know the right things to practice. Whether you want to learn guitar, recording, mixing or more, I can help you out!
