Hendrix teaches the blues, why learning notes might be bad for you, and learn Metallica from Metallica!
Plus, what guitar cable do you use?
I have a ton of new guitar links to share with you this week. So with that, I’ll try and keep my commentary brief (let’s see how that goes)! You should check out what you love, and get into the lessons, behind the scenes looks with guitarists and more as soon as possible. I remember guesting on a podcast a couple years ago, and the host asking me is there really that much guitar stuff to talk about for even a monthly newsletter? Well, as you might know if you’ve been reading Six String Sunday Club for a couple years, the answer is yes, and we do it each and every week!
Let’s get into this week’s links:
The Night JIMI HENDRIX Played His BEST Solo - Back in May of 1969, Hendrix played one of the best versions of “Red House”. Tim Pierce breaks down how this tracked “etched” the blues into his playing, after listening to it hundreds of times. Isn’t this one of the best ways to learn guitar? Really digging down into a track, and taking out all the best parts, and then applying them to your playing.
Practice Arpeggios like THIS - Making Melodic Lines for Jazz Guitar - Want to sound less scalar and robotic? Check out this great John Cordy video where he shows us how to approach arpeggios, while making them sound melodic. Later in the week, he also put out this great vid on beautiful, Larry Carlton-esque chords.
GUITAR (feat. Larry Carlton & Mark Lettieri) - Cordy’s Carlton lesson was inspired by the latest Cory Wong show, where he had on Carlton and Mark Lettieri. It’s amazing how much stuff Cory puts out on a regular basis. I absolutely love watching his shows, seeing what great guests he gets on, and learning in a really fun way. My favorite part of this episode, aside from all the great jamming, was the insightful roundtable interview the three shared. Lots of great guitar knowledge.
Learning Notes is BAD FOR YOU! - I’ve been hearing this from so many guitar players I trust and look up to. Knowing notes is important, but maybe it’s more important to know chord/scale degree numbers. Really spend some good time with this video, it might change your perspective. If you like this video, follow it up with Andy Wood’s latest on interval basics.
Fingerboard Radius Explained: Which is Best For You? - StringJoy has been putting out some really interesting videos, diving into different aspects of guitar hardware. In this vid they talk all about fingerboard radius, and show us some examples of guitarists and the radii they used.
The Best Van Halen Riff You’ve NEVER Heard - Awesome EVH guitar, incredible Eddie tone, and a lesson on a VH riff? Count me in! Always love Ben’s breakdowns of classic shred riffs. What’s your favorite Van Halen album?
EVH commemorates Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption solo with new Striped Series guitar, launches 3 fresh natural-finished models - Speaking of EVH, I’m so happy that the brand is continuing to put out great looking/sounding guitars. Not only are they releasing a new Striped Series guitar, but they’re also launching 3 natural-finish models that look stunning.
The Chase Bliss Generation Loss MKII makes your guitar sound like a VCR - One of the guys in our Discord server brought this up, and I had to take a look. While the new Chase Bliss delay pedal is a bit pricey, it really sounds awesome. The pre-order is happening soon, and you’ll want to jump on it if you’d like to get one of these pedals. If you missed out on the MK1 version of this pedal, now’s your chance to get one of the most unique sounding, and customizable delay pedals out there.
How to solo over one of the most important turnarounds in music - The I-VI-II-V progression is one of the most popular you’ll see in blues. In this GW lesson, we get a good dose of theory and examples on how to tackle it.
Metallica partner with Yousician to teach you how to play their tracks, exactly how they’re meant to be played | Guitar.com | All Things Guitar - You might know Yousician as the company that serves ads on nearly every guitar video you watch on YouTube. The app has been downloaded thousands of times, and is popular for its “bouncing ball” approach to playing tabs. Just recently, Metallica teamed up with Yousician, in what looks to be an exciting partnership. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield will teach you 10 Metallica classics. Everything from Enter Sandman to Master of Puppets. If you’re just getting started on guitar, and dig Metallica, this looks like a great way to learn!
The Most Iconic Riffs Using the Pentatonic Scale - It’s no secret that the pentatonic scale has inspired countless riffs. Marty Schwartz sat down this Saturday and streamed the most iconic riffs that use this simple 5 note scale. Want to get inspired to write your own riffs? Check this livestream out.
Cables! How much do they affect tone? - Pete Thorn some really great sound Cordial Cables against some other heavy hitters in the category. While listening on headphones I could hear some real differences between all the cables that Thorn compared them to. I feel like cabling is one of the easiest ways to improve your tone. And if you buy a quality made cable early on, you won’t have to worry about it falling apart after only a couple of uses. What type of guitar cable do you use? Let me know!
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading Six String Sunday!
