There’s so many great links in this week’s issue, and boy do we need it after this insane week of craziness happening in the world.
My favorite is the first link, where Tom Bukovac and Guthrie Trapp sat down with Rick Beato to geek out about guitar. We also have new music from Andy Wood, how to use the wah, a new Electric Lady Studios documentary and more. Let’s get into this week’s links!
This week’s guitar links!
Tom Bukovac and Guthrie Trapp: Nashville's Hottest Guitar Gunslingers - This video where Rick Beato has Tom Bukovac and Guthrie Trapp on the channel, was one of my favorites this week. The guys play a song off their new album, they geek out for an hour about guitar, whether it be cool chords or gear, and at some point the group is nearly moved to tears. It's a video that's worth your time.
A History of Suhr Guitars with Andy Wood - Who better than Andy Wood to sit down with Sweetwater to discuss the history of Suhr guitars? They talk about some legendary instruments, amps and pedals, and how these guitars always have a very custom shop vibe. The playing and tone on this video is phenomenal.
Shoot The Sun Down - Andy Wood - Speaking of which, Wood released the 2nd single off his upcoming album 'Charisma’, and it is fantastic! Following “Free Range Chicken" where he dueled with Brent Mason, “Shoot the Sun Down” is an epic track, with a heavy vibe. To me, it sounds like an ode to Satriani, but I'd like to hear what you think too. I am so excited for this album to come out - it's set to release on August 9th.
Nick Johnston - Remarkably Human | Live One Take Playthrough at Sheet Happens HQ - Is Nick Johnston the Jay-Z of the guitar world, but without all the drama? 🙂 Nick joined the Sheet Happens folks over at their HQ to play a one take version of his song “Remarkably Human". Check out this video, and then check out his catalog of great guitar playing. I'd start with ‘In A Locked Room On The Moon’.
Master the Wah Pedal: From Basic to Advanced Techniques - Whether you're a fan of Hammett, Cantrell, Dime or more, one thing they have in common is that the wah pedal is a huge part of their sound. Marty Schwartz just came out with a new video this week to talk all about the wah - from what you should buy, to beginner techniques like using it with chords, and even more ideas like using it to solo.
Why You Should Learn TRIADS & 8 Songs To Play! - Do we talk about triads nearly every week in the newsletter? Probably, and for good reason! They're so important to understanding the fretboard, playing/writing songs, and slotting in to a mix live and in the studio. In the latest video from Andy Guitar, he goes over more reasons why you should learn triads, and includes examples from 8 songs, featuring “Under Pressure", “Roxanne”, and more.
3 Simple Ear Training Exercises For Guitar Players - Developing your ear is an essential skill to becoming a better guitar player. Jon MacLennan gives us 3 simple ideas of how we can work on ear training as guitar players. The best way to go about learning things like this, is to make it fun. These 3 tips are sure to help you have a good time, while you're improving.
Play Over Changes | Choosing The Right Approach - As you might have noticed, when I can, I always try and include links or pair links together that work well together. In addition to working on your ear, the ability to play over changes is so crucial to sounding like you know what you're doing. In Jack Ruch's new video, he talks about 3 approaches to playing over the changes.
Free Masterclass: Manuel Gardner Fernandes - GuitarVivo has been teaming up with some of the best guitarists for years now, and consistently putting out quality guitar material. Their latest comes from Manuel Gardner Fernandes, and is called Modern Electric Guitar Technique. Manuel sat down with GuitarVivo's Luke Lewis to preview the book and do a masterclass.
The Guitarists Of Steely Dan - I love listening to all the configurations of Steely Dan. They had a core of Fagen/Becker for so long, but have worked with so many different musicians over the years. In Late Night Lessons new video, he talks about some of the most popular guitarists that worked with Steely Dan - including Jeff “Skunk" Baxter, Larry Carlton and more.
A New Documentary About Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios is Coming #jimihendrix #documentary - It looks like the original video has been taken down, but it seems like an Electric Ladyland documentary is on the way at some point! I'm a huge fan of Hendrix, so I'm really looking forward to this!
How To Play FAST Arpeggios Like George Benson - George Benson is a legend of jazz guitar, and he's always played some insanely fast arpeggios. In Chase Maddox's video, he explains 5 things you should work on, so you can get up to speed with playing arpeggios like this. I think this is the first time I'm linking to Chase's channel on the newsletter, so I'm looking forward to checking out his back catalog of lessons!
“Man, could he play the guitar or what?” Stevie Ray Vaughan stuns David Letterman in newly uploaded footage of his Late Night show debut - I owe a great deal of my playing style to Stevie Ray Vaughan. For decades now, he's been a guitarist whose albums I go back to time and time again for inspiration. Recently, the Letterman show put up some old footage of SRV playing “Tightrope”. Letterman and Paul Shaffer's reactions say everything in this video.
“You should be recording your guitars with a DI so your tone can be rescued if needed”: Sleep Token and Tesseract’s mixing engineers reveal how to improve your guitar recordings – and it starts with ditching your ego - To close out this week's issue, I wanted to link to a great post from Guitar World. They talked with some great mixing engineers, all about focusing on how you should record and mix your guitar. There's some great tips in this article - everything from recording a separate DI track (for re-amping later and as a backup), to how to help your guitar tones cut through a mix.
