It’s been a busy, yet amazing week for me over here at Chasing Sound! May has ended, which means the Chasing Sound Song Challenge has come to a close too. On May 31st I released “Between Daylight” to all streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify, but also released it to Bandcamp too (if buying music is your thing). If you want to check out some of the guitars I used, I'll post a photo at the bottom of this week's issue.
I had a blast getting back to songwriting in May, and I ended up with some fun posts too if you want to run the challenge any month - just head to this link on the blog. Be on the lookout in June for a backing track version of “Between Daylight”, so you can shred your own lines over the track. I also have some other ideas for guest spots on upcoming songs, so stay tuned to the newsletter for more.
I also went live yesterday on June 3rd to talk about the making of the song, and show you the main riff, and some of my favorite leads. I also talked about the Fractal presets I used, and how you can get them too. Check out the livestream replay here. I'm streaming live to YouTube, Twitch and Twitter, every other weekend. If you haven't subbed to Chasing Sound on those platforms, please do!
But I wasn’t the only one who was busy in the shed last month. We also had reader Kirk B. come up with a fun track called “Resume” that takes us on a journey from country, to reggae, metal and more. There’s even an easter egg in there if you listen all the way to the end. You can check out Kirk’s song here. I think he did an awesome job with this track. Check out the rest of his channel for more.
Alright, let's get into this week's links!
This Week’s Guitar Links!
- Between Daylight is now streaming! - One final bit of self promotion. If you'd rather listen on YouTube, here's a link to my song promo on the blog. The single was inspired a lot by guys like Cory Wong and Oz Noy, which is why it was so interesting I found our next link.
- The Captain Meets Oz Noy! - The Captain over at Andertons had Oz Noy in the house. I've been a big fan of Oz for years now - I love his jazz, yet not jazz style of music, and I think I originally fell in love with his sound, because his use of pedals is wild. Oz talks about his multiple pedalboards, how he came up as a guitar player, and getting the fun jazz into your own playing style.
- The Nuno Bettencourt Interview - Rick Beato dropped a huge interview this week with Nuno Bettencourt. I don't watch many 2 hour videos, but I watched this entire one. Nuno talks about the new Extreme album, recording guitar, and of course Eddie Van Halen. He also brings up the whole “Nuno will take over Eddie's throne" argument. Every recent Nuno interview i've heard lately, sounds like a love letter to EVH. Even at his crazy technical and songwriting level, Nuno is still humble, and I love that about him. If you're a guitar fan, I'm sure you'll love this interview.
- Hear the new Extreme single that Nuno Bettencourt says features his favorite solo on the whole album - Speaking of which, Extreme came out with a video for “Other Side of the Rainbow” this week, and it features Nuno's favorite solo on the record. The track is a very breezy, feel good song, with lots of 12 string playing, but Nuno's solo really stands out. He's setting a new bar on this entire album. Thankfully we're only a few short days from hearing the whole thing!
- String Skipping Arpeggio Workout - If you want to get some great string skipping technique under your fingers, similar to guys like Nuno, Petrucci, and Vai, check out this great video from Late Night Lessons. He shows us a process to take arpeggios to another level with string skipping, and then sequencing them into a chord progression.
- Trem Tricks with Mark Lettieri | Sunflower Fiore - PRS Guitars got Mark Lettieri to do an awesome tremolo tricks video. I loved how Mark used the bar for blending chords. I'm going to try some of this stuff in my own playing.
- Jack & Owane Live in Krakow feat. Maciej Dzik & Riccardo Oliva - I listened to Jack & Owane's latest album what seems like a million times last year. The two recently put up a full half hour show from Europe, full of guitar goodness for your ears.
- Larry Carlton: "I believe my Sire line is better than anything Fender's Squier line is producing. These are great guitars, and I believe in them" - There's been so much talk on YouTube and elsewhere about the Sire guitars from Larry Carlton. I've seriously debated between a Sire and an Epi if I pick up a hollowbody, and it's leaning towards Sire after hearing SO many good reviews. In this post from GW, Larry talks about why he thinks his line of guitars is outperforming other big brands. Have you tried any of these yet?
- Run out of ideas? Try Scott Holiday's 'mind eraser' songwriting method - We've been talking about songwriting a bunch lately. But what if you’ve written a bunch, and everything is sounding same-y? Try Scott Holiday's 'mind eraser' trick, that'll have you trying new things - tunings, scales, and more.
- Double Whammy: metal guitarist Sean Long goes viral with his bonkers dual-pedal technique - I don't like it when people hate on guitarists using effects. You have players like Sean Long using 2 Whammys at the same time to create some otherworldly lines. Check out his IG profile here.
