A Wonderwall of links in this week’s issue…I’ll see myself out
Plus, now Noel Gallagher writes songs
I’m back in action this weekend, after a fun vacation that was capped off on Labor Day with a trip to MetLife to see Oasis - a bucket list item for me! I have a ton of fun links, an album to recommend, and more. I’m just getting back into the swing of things, so if I missed anything, let me know!
🔊Turn This Up
I found Rotem Sivan on YouTube after one of the folks in the Chasing Sound Discord linked to a video he was doing on modes. That was a couple of years ago, and man, since then Rotem has been through a lot. I admire his guitar playing, the way he teaches guitar, his songwriting, but most of all, how he seems to do it all in the midst of having twins (one of which has been going through a battle with brain cancer). It’s truly awe inspiring.
Recently Rotem came out with a fantastic album called Heart Thieves. Not only are Rotem’s originals great, but you also have covers like “In the Mood” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” (which is right up my alley). The arrangements are great, the overall tone of the album is warm and inviting, and it’s just a joy to listen to. You can check out more about Sivan’s journey in creating this album here. If you’re looking for an album to relax to this weekend, you owe it to yourself to check out Heart Thieves. And while you’re at it, go subscribe to Rotem’s channel on YouTube!
❓Sunday Sound Off
Being at Oasis this week was like a time machine that transported me back into my bedroom as a teen - CDs in my Sony jukebox, guitar on and plugged into my practice amp, trying to learn some of my favorite songs.
It’s crazy how certain songs, riffs, sounds can take you back to when you first started learning guitar. It reminded me of how carefree days like those were, where you didn’t have many priorities, and you could just jam to songs for hours on end. My question to you this week - what’s one song that instantly transports you back to when you first picked up the playing guitar?
📝 Classic Chasing Sound Post
Almost three years ago, I put together a simple list post: 50 of my favorite guitarists, each paired with a YouTube link to a song I thought was worth your time. The list actually came from my old podcast, Amped Up, which I used to record entirely on my phone with Anchor - kind of like building a DIY radio show out of clips. I’d make episodes everywhere: at home, walking around town, even in an airport in Sweden.
I haven’t done a podcast (or even a livestream) in a while, but I’m itching to spin up a new project. What kind of show would get you excited to listen in? What would make you subscribe?
🔗 This Week’s Guitar Links
I’m not going to dive into every single link this time - this issue is more of a collection from the past couple of weeks, including a few I saved while I was on vacation. That being said, Tyler Larson has a new podcast with Jared James Nichols, Beato interviewed David Gilmour, Stevie T watched some of the absolute worst guitar lessons ever, and more. I hope you enjoy this week’s links. I’ll be back to my regular commentary next week. Oh, and one more thing…I try and find new channels and helpful videos all the time, but if there’s someone who I should check out, please let me know!
