A Pantera reunion, Master of Puppets everywhere, and new Jason Richardson
Plus, what to practice if you have no time
We are back with a full issue of Six String Sunday Club! From songwriting lessons with Noel Gallagher, to getting that Metallica tone without spending your savings, and lessons that’ll make you a better player, this issue is packed with great links.
Even though we’re in summer right now, I have a ton of fun things planned for Chasing Sound over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on ChasingSound.com, and @ChasingSound on social media as both places are going to be a lot more active. Alright let’s get into this week’s links!
Pantera recruit Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante for 2023 tour | Guitar World - The news of a Pantera reunion has been making the rounds this week, and it seems the internet is divided - one half think it’s in poor taste and a cash grab, and others are excited to hear these songs be played live again. I’m kind of split on the announcement, but I think if anyone could do justice to Dime’s memory, it’s Zakk Wylde.
10 CLEAN Guitar Riffs That Will Make You Better at Guitar - I’m sharing this video from MusicIsWin for two reasons - 1, the riffs in it are fantastic to learn. And 2, the guitar Tyler is playing is made mostly from glass. What do you think of the tone on this one?
Building A Perfect Replica Of John Mayer’s Sob Rock Pedalboard - Whether you’re a fan or not of John Mayer, this video on building up a replica ‘Sob Rock’ pedal board is great. Not only has Justin done a ton of research on the pedals themselves, he also dives deep on how they’re connected and other secrets of the board. I loved watching this board come together, not to mention it sounds great!
Older learner? Here’s how to learn faster! - JustinGuitar is one of the OG’s of guitar YouTube, so whenever I see a great lesson from him, I always try and share it here on the newsletter. One of the number one things we want to do when practicing guitar is to not only learn new things, but to retain what we’ve learned. Get your neuroplasticity on, and start remembering what you learn!
13 Musical Changes That Will AMAZE You! - Rick Beato talks about the element of surprise in music. Whether it be dynamics, modulation or something else, these 13 changes are great jump off points for creating excitement in your own songs.
KILLER ARPEGGIOS! You Should Try This Advanced Pentatonic Arpeggio Hybrid Picking Lick - I love lessons that combine multiple different things to practice in one. John Cordy just shared this awesome pentatonic arpeggio lesson, that utilizes hybrid picking. If you’re already comfortable with things like alternate picking, economy picking, etc. and want to shake things up a bit, try hybrid picking. It just might open up a whole new world of playing for you.
Learning the Fretboard with FRETMONSTER (free web-based tool) - I’ve always loved the look of David Pots’ Song Notes lessons, and now he’s back with updates to a tool every guitarist should check out. You might have seen something like Fret Monster before, and that’s because so many different people have made something similar. I really like the look of FretMonster though. If you’re looking to learn the entire fretboard whether it’s on your computer or even your phone, this is a great reference tool to have - which allows you to bring up scales in any key, all over the fretboard, with helpful information about scale steps. One thing I like to do with a tool like this, is to bring up a backing track, key in a scale I’m not familiar with into FretMonster, and try to use the visual map it brings up as a guide for soloing ideas.
The Underrated Side of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Playing - If you’ve been reading this newsletter for any amount of time, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of SRV. It’s so common to see lessons on SRV, Hendrix, and other players typically known for their flashy lead work. But that’s why I was so excited to watch this video, which focuses on Stevie’s rhythm work.
If You Have No Time, Practice Like This - I also really loved this video from SamuraiGuitarist. So many of us only have a really small amount of time to practice the instrument we love. Steve brings up a couple different types of practice, whether you’d like to work on a technique, learning songs, soloing or something else. If you sit down intentionally and have a plan, your practice session will go well.
Watch: Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn play Metallica’s Master of Puppets, for real - It seems everyone is talking about Stranger Things’ “Master of Puppets” moment. I loved this video of Joseph Quinn, who plays Eddie Munson in the show, actually riffing out to Metallica’s classic song.
Sound Like Metallica | Without Busting the Bank - And if you want to sound like Metallica without busting the bank, you should check out this video from Andertons. They take a trip around the store to pick up some awesome gear that’ll have you channeling your inner Hetfield and Hammett.
Want to MASTER Puppets? You’re Gonna Need THIS - Want more Metallica? Ben Eller helps us with the Hetfield side of Master of Puppets, breaking down 4 things that’ll have you playing downstrokes like a pro.
Sparrow (feat. Tina Guo) - Jason Richardson & Luke Holland - If instead you’re looking for some new heaviness, you should check out Jason Richardson’s latest called “Sparrow”. His new album “II” just came out, and if you’re in the mood for some heavy, technical playing, you should check it out.
“I Sit Down With an Acoustic Guitar”: Noel Gallagher Explains How Hit Records Are Made - Without a doubt, Oasis was one of the biggest bands 90’s and early 00’s, with the Gallagher brothers penning some pretty amazing songs. Guitar Player brought back a classic interview with Noel Gallagher from the ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ era, to talk about writing hit songs.
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading Six String Sunday!
